MOSS Archives

Privacy policy

Last updated: 6 October 2026

Applies to the MOSS Archives Android app, version 1.0.0.

Who we are

MOSS Archives is an Android app made by Katie at Made by MOSS, based in the United Kingdom. Made by MOSS is responsible for the personal information it receives, such as support emails. You can contact us at hello@madebymoss.co.uk.

Your archives

MOSS Archives stores your collections, item cards, custom fields and values, notes, dates, prices, barcode values, photos and photo-editing settings in the app’s private storage on your device. It also stores collection names, box styles, label fonts, ordering and preferences used to display and organise your archives.

There are no user accounts, sign-in or MOSS cloud sync. Made by MOSS does not receive a copy of your collections or photos through normal app use.

Backups and spreadsheets you choose to save

“Back up archives” creates a file containing your archive database and saved photos. “Export spreadsheet” creates an Excel file with a worksheet for each collection, including item information and custom fields but excluding pictures. Android’s file picker lets you choose a destination on your device or a storage provider. A provider you choose handles the file under its own privacy terms; Made by MOSS does not receive it.

The app does not encrypt or password-protect these exported files. Anyone with access may be able to read them. Keep them somewhere you trust. Deleting information inside the app does not delete earlier exports.

Android backup and device transfers

Android’s automatic backup and device-transfer features are separate from the app’s “Back up archives” option. MOSS Archives currently allows Android’s default backup behaviour, so Android may copy your app data to a backup service or another device, depending on your device, provider and settings. Data may be restored when you reinstall the app or set up a replacement device.

Made by MOSS does not operate or have access to these system backups. Use your Android and backup-provider settings to manage them. Google’s services are covered by Google’s privacy policy; other device or backup providers have their own policies.

Photos, camera and barcode scanning

You can choose a photo using Android’s photo picker or take one using your camera app. The app keeps an imported copy in its private storage for your item card and photo edits. Your selected camera or photo provider handles its own access and privacy settings; the app does not upload your selected pictures to Made by MOSS.

Barcode scanning uses Google’s code scanner through Google Play services. The scanner uses the camera when you start a scan and returns the scanned value to the app. MOSS Archives does not itself request camera permission for this scanner. Scanning is processed on your device.

Automatic cut-outs and Google services

Automatic photo cut-outs use Google ML Kit subject segmentation. Photo processing happens on your device: the input photo and resulting cut-out are not sent to Google servers for processing. Google Play services may download or update the components and models needed for scanning and cut-outs.

Google ML Kit can send technical information to Google for diagnostics and service usage measurement. This can include device and app information, device or installation identifiers, performance and error metrics, feature events, configuration and input/output sizes. This is separate from your photo contents. Google uses this information to maintain, debug and improve its services and detect misuse. See ML Kit’s privacy terms, its data disclosure information and Google’s privacy policy.

Other permissions and external services

The Android app includes internet and network-state permissions through its Google service dependencies. It does not request location, contacts, microphone, calendar or broad file-storage permissions. Saving exports uses Android’s file picker for the destination you select.

MOSS Archives contains no advertising or MOSS-operated tracking, analytics, automatic crash-reporting or remote AI service. Fonts and artwork are bundled with the app. Google service diagnostics are described above.

Website and email links open your browser or email app. Bug reports and feedback are editable drafts; nothing is sent until you send it. The app does not automatically attach collections, photos, screenshots or logs. External apps, Google Play and Android handle their own platform information under their own policies.

If you contact us

If you send a support request, bug report, feedback or privacy enquiry, we receive your email address and whatever name, message and attachments you choose to send. The bug-report button opens an editable email template; nothing is sent until you send it from your email app.

We use correspondence to reply, investigate problems and improve the app. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in supporting users and maintaining MOSS Archives. Our email provider processes messages to deliver and store our correspondence. We do not sell your personal information or use support messages for advertising.

We retain correspondence only for as long as needed to handle the enquiry and any necessary follow-up or legal obligations. You can ask us to delete it using the contact email above.

Deleting information

You can delete collections and item cards in the app. To remove all local archive data, imported photos and settings together, clear the app’s storage in Android settings or uninstall it. Pictures originally held by your camera or photo provider are separate from the app’s imported copies.

Exported files and Android backups are separate copies: delete or manage them through their storage location or provider. A previous backup may contain content you deleted from the app and may be restored by Android. Made by MOSS has no archive server or online account to delete and cannot remotely erase your device or backups.

Your privacy rights

For personal information we hold, such as correspondence, you may ask for access, correction or deletion, or object to or request restriction of its use. Where applicable, you may also request data portability. Contact hello@madebymoss.co.uk to exercise your rights. You can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

Children’s privacy

MOSS Archives is a general-purpose app and is not specifically directed at children. The local-storage approach applies to all users; Google service diagnostics are described above.

This website

Opening this policy or another Made by MOSS webpage is a separate website visit. The site is hosted on GitHub Pages and loads fonts from Google Fonts. Your browser sends ordinary connection information, such as your IP address, to those providers to load the page and fonts. See GitHub’s privacy statement and Google Fonts’ privacy information. Your archives are not included in those requests.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as MOSS Archives develops. The latest version will remain on this page, with its update date shown above.
